Why the sunset and the show belong together

An Uluwatu Temple sunset kecak dance evening is built around one fixed point: the show starts at 18:00 every day and runs until 19:00.1 The amphitheater sits 70 m above the Indian Ocean, and the performance takes place as the sun sets behind the temple.2 Everything else, the drive, the temple walk and dinner, has to fit around that hour.

That is where a tour earns its price. The road to the Bukit peninsula gets heavy in the late afternoon in the holiday season, Ubud is 1.5 to 2 hours away, and the gate, the temple fee and the show ticket are separate stops once you arrive.345 A driver who knows the timing takes that juggling off your hands.

The tours below are well-reviewed versions of this evening, on Viator and on GetYourGuide. They differ in three ways that matter: whether you share the car, whether the temple entry and the show ticket are included, and whether the evening ends with seafood at Jimbaran. Read the option you book as closely as the title. A cheap tour that skips the kecak ticket can end up costing more than a dearer one that includes it.

The private sunset tour with dinner

The tour this page books is a private Uluwatu sunset tour by Eco Bali Tours, sold on Viator: 7 hours from your hotel, with about 60 minutes at Uluwatu Temple, 60 minutes at the kecak and 60 minutes at Jimbaran Bay. It starts from $32 and carries 4,524 reviews averaging 4.86.

What you get depends on the option. The all-inclusive version covers entrance fees, the kecak ticket for the first show and a seafood dinner at Jimbaran; two versions leave dinner out, for the first or the second show; and a basic tour leaves out fees, tickets and dinner. Bottled water, an English-speaking driver and taxes are included, gratuities and personal expenses are not.

It is priced per person, for up to 6 adults in one booking, and it can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before. A private car suits families or a group of friends who like to linger on the cliff path, stop for photographs and choose the second show on a crowded evening. Book the first show if the sunset is the point of your evening: on the cliff, the light changes most during the early scenes.

The private tour

Private car, up to 6 adults per booking.

The walking tour

A guide walks you through before the show.

The shared 6-hour tour

Pickup and the kecak ticket are in the price.

The small-group tour

Groups of up to 12 people, starting from $20.

The guided temple visit

A guide meets you at the north visitor gate.

A guided walk before the show

The second Viator option is built around a guide rather than a car. This Uluwatu walking sunset tour by Di Bali Tour runs 5 hours, starts from $35 and has 1,280 reviews averaging 4.86. Its shortest option meets you at 5:30pm at the main entry for a 2-hour walk and the 7pm show.

Its other options add a hotel transfer and the 6PM show, or stretch to a 7-hour evening with dinner at Jimbaran. An English-speaking guide or driver, the entrance ticket, the kecak ticket and the sarong are included, with set dinner and hotel pickup by option.

Two conditions to note: a minimum of 2 people per booking, and a smart casual dress code; the tour is not wheelchair accessible. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Choose it if you want someone to explain the temple and the story on the walk, rather than only drive you there.

Shared and small-group tours

On GetYourGuide, the most reviewed version of this evening is a 6-hour sunset tour to Uluwatu Temple, the kecak and Jimbaran Bay, with pickup included. The kecak ticket is part of the price, and the listing notes that in bad weather the dance is performed on a smaller stage. It starts from $40 with 3,215 reviews averaging 4.67.

A smaller format caps the group at 12. That tour lasts 5.5 hours: about an hour by car, 2 hours at the temple with the sunset and scenic views, an hour at the kecak and an hour back, with a live guide in French, English or German. It starts from $20 and has 502 reviews. It enforces the temple dress code strictly: shoulders, underarms, back and knees covered.

For an Uluwatu tour with kecak dance on a tighter budget, a guided temple visit is the lightest option: 75 minutes in the temple with a guide who meets you at the north visitor gate, and the kecak ticket as an extra. It starts from $16. All three of these GetYourGuide tours cancel free up to 24 hours before.

The kecak dance and Jimbaran: dinner on the sand

Pairing the kecak dance and Jimbaran Bay is the classic ending to the evening. Several of these tours go straight from the amphitheater to the bay: the private Viator tour lists about 60 minutes there, the walking tour offers dinner at Jimbaran in its longest option, and the 6-hour GetYourGuide tour ends at Jimbaran Bay.

Check what dinner means on your option. On the private tour the seafood dinner is included only on the all-inclusive option; on the walking tour a set dinner comes with some options only. If dinner is not included, you choose and pay at the restaurant yourself, which also lets you pick the table.

By the time you sit down the sun has gone and the air on the beach has cooled. Keep a little cash for drinks and tips, and remember that gratuities are not included on the private tour.

Doing it yourself instead

A tour is not the only way to see the sunset and the show. The entry ticket sold on the rest of this site covers the kecak alone, starts from $9 and is valid for the date and time slot you choose. Add a driver or a ride-hailing car for the 45 minutes or so from Kuta or Seminyak, and you have the same evening on your own schedule.17

Doing it yourself means doing the arithmetic yourself, too. The temple entrance fee is not in that ticket and is paid on site, IDR 60,000 for a foreign adult on the management's list, and parking is extra.1819 Payments at the gate are generally cash only: keep the temple fee and the parking money apart, in the right notes.19

The trade-off is the planning. You decide when to leave, you find the counter and the show entrance yourself, and you book dinner in Jimbaran on your own. For a couple staying close to the Bukit that is easy; for a family coming down from Ubud, 1.5 to 2 hours away, a tour that handles the driving and the tickets is often worth the difference.4

What a tour does not change

A guide can queue for you, but the temple's rules still apply. Sarong and sash are compulsory and free at the gate, and the managing body wants glasses, hats and bags kept out of the monkeys' reach.2021 Customary law keeps women who have their period out of the temple grounds.22

Seats are not reserved by a tour either. The management says arriving earlier does not guarantee one specific seat, and it asks the audience to follow the staff's seating guidance.2324 Tours that reach the gate in good time give you more choice; a late pickup or a slow road takes it away, whoever is driving.

Finally, the weather decides the sunset, not the tour. Denpasar's BMKG averages put 345 mm of rain into January and 25 mm into August, and the Ministry of Tourism dates the dry season from April to October.2526 In the wet months, keep the tour's free cancellation in mind and watch the forecast the day before.
